DVD Review: Get Smart’s Bruce And Lloyd Out of Control

feature photo

Bruce and Lloyd are a couple of Research and Development geeks who reluctantly are forced to leave the comfort of the agency lab (Out of CONTROL, get it?!) and track down a new invisibility cloak that has been stolen from them before the Underchief finds out.

Out of Control takes place at the same time as Get Smart! the movie, as evidenced by scenes of the Control Headquarters being destroyed. It is a nice, complimentary piece to the movie. Although it is not as funny as the Steve Carrell vehicle, it has a good pace to it and enough funny bits to keep you entertained. Clocking in at a bit over an hour, it is the perfect length to keep you entertained without seeming dragged out . I felt that perhaps this movie might be a pilot for a potential tv series but I guess only time will tell on that one.

Masi Oka and Nate Torrence are both accomplished character actors and did a good job in the lead roles of this film. The scene stealer though was definately Larry Miller as the underchief, who although limited in screentime, brought the funny to all of his scenes. There are cameos from Patrick Warburton and Anna Hathaway that are funny as well, although I suspect the Agent 99 scene might have been extra footage from the Get Smart movie.

The special effects were surprisingly good for a straight to dvd release. Consisting mostly of explosions, invisibility cloaks and things of that nature, the effects wre on par with the Get Smart! remake currently in theaters.

I skimmed through the special features and found the Real Science featurette the most interesting of the three. It is definitely worth checking out if you are a science geek like me.

If you enjoyed Get Smart! go ahead and check this one out, it has the same brand of humor as the movie and I think you will enjoy it.
