Friday Night Frights: Salvage Blu Ray DVD Review
Salvage revolved around Claire Parker. Claire is a typical 19 year old college student who starts having trouble sleeping. When she dozes off, she finds herself in a nightmarish dream world. Although the locations seem to vary her dreams inevitably end up with Claire being pursued and often brutally beaten, stabbed and ultimately killed by local serial killer Duke Desmond. To add to her confusion, in reality, Duke was just shot and killed by the police the week prior. With even her boyfriend doubting her claims, Claire tries in vain to understand why she is experiencing these nightmarish visions and eventually even goes to the killer’s house looking for clues. If I had to sum up Salvage in a sentence, I would say it feels like Groundhog Day written and directed by Clive Barker!
This modestly budgeted film boasts good acting and a very strong plot that keeps you guessing until the final minutes of the movie. Salvage starts a bit slowly but picked up pace quickly as the plot twists and winds in such a way that, once you are sure you have figured it out and know what is going on, something happens to disprove your theory.
The cinematography enhances the nightmarish feel of the story. There were a lot of dreamlike sequences that left the viewer wondering whether Claire was awake or dreaming.
The special effects are a bit sparce but much like a classic Hitchcock film, the plot drives this film and adding more gore would detract from that. Lauren Currie Lewis puts in a very strong performance as Claire and Chris Ferry was superb as killer Duke Desmond. The Crook brothers, who wrote and directed this movie did a great job. I definately plan on hitting the internet after this review to see what other films they have had a hand in, so I can check those out as well.
On a side note, Salvage is one of the first Blu Ray discs from Echo Bridge Entertainment. The suggested retail price is $14.95, which is a really good price for Blu Ray discs. The film looks great in 1080p and the Smart Menu technology is a nice presentation. I anticipate future Blu Rays from Echo Bridge Home Entertainment including (hopefully), Blu Ray releases of Roman and the original Prom Night.
I thoroughly enjoyed Salvage. The acting was good and the storyline is very unique and original. If you like tense movies with a good ending that keeps you guessing, then I recommend that you go out and pick up a copy.
