Vengeance DVD Review

Vengeance is the story of several Police Officers who are pursuing a band of escaped criminals. The criminals enter the enchanted forest which, as legend tells is cursed. As the policemen, led by Captain Wut pursue, they are about to discover it is all true. After being attacked by the flesh stripping Tiger Wasps, vampiric Fruit Tree Maidens and the Silver Serpents, they all converge on the ancient hidden village in the middle of the forest. And that is when things start getting weird…..

Unfortunately , I can’t get into what happens in the village, as it would spoil the movie.
The first 20 minutes of the movie were slow, but once the background was established it picked up considerably. Upon entering the forest, the movie escallated to a higher level. The acting is hard for me to cover, considering the film is subtitled and/or dubbed depending on how you set your dvd player. The special effects were strong. In places it reminded me of Pan’s Labrynth. There is a lot of CGI but I was impressed at the quality of the effects. There were also some practical effects mixed in quite effectively to balance out the movie. The forest visuals were crisp and the cinematography looked beautiful.

There were gore elements, however I have a hard time calling this a horror film. It is more of a Fantasy movie. The forest is populated with mythical creatures that are a lot of fun to watch. Overall I would describe this film as a conglomeration of several Sci-Fi channel movies. The special effects are superior to many of those entries, however, and the plot is extremely original and full of twists.

I did not view the Making of featurette, however I did like the trailers for the Cannes film festival screening. I highly recommend the English dubbing in lieu of the subtitles. In the flashback scenes, the dialogue switched from the voiceover to the scenes quite a bit and it got very confusing. The music video I found unwatchable, and didn’t make it through the entire segment.

I recommend this movie for special effect and fantasy buffs. It has a very unique feel to it and is a good watch. If you are a Fantasy/Sci-Fi/Monster movie junkie, you will find something that you like in Vengeance. Definately check this one out.
